Anti-Virus Recommendation
First off, no security program is comprhensive; they pretty much all detect and stop 90%+ of the threats to your PC. But every computer that comes in to our store for service has a security suite of some kind, and they all have infections. So what really matters to us is how the package affects overall system performance. A security suite that takes 11 processes and 140Mb ram is a bad program, regardless of how effective it is because it defeats the purpose of having a computer in the first place.

AVG is no longer a good product in our opinion. Over the past year, the core design of the program has been changed such that it is now taking up to 120 Mb ram, which makes it just as fat and slow as Panda, Kaspersky, Shaw Secure or McAfee. If you want something free and slow, AVG is still it.

Avast! has come up with a free version of their commercial software and it only runs 3 processes and 27 Mb RAM. Available here.

Another great free security program is Avira Antivir, top-rated detection and lightweight memory footprint makes it our new preferred in-shop freeby, though it's a little tricky to obtain. Just google "donwload antivir", that should get you to it.

Norton Internet Security 2010 is fatter than 2009 was, it now takes 3 processes and 20 Mb RAM. That still makes it the best product available because it is fast and light while still giving leading edge effectiveness against threats of any kind. In addition to virus protection you get a software firewall, spam blocking, browser protection, Instant Messenger scan, Identity Safe password protection. My verdict: PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE at a reasonable price. It's just $79 for 3 PCs for one year. Do NOT confuse this product with Norton 360, they are not remotely the same. Norton 360 is up to its old tricks of loading down machines incredibly, AVOID.

Check out AV Comparatives for an independent reviewer's take on all the latest security software. This guy doesn't care about memory footprint like I do (nobody seems to), but his reviews are fair and accurate.
